Coordinate Measuring Machine 2003—Brown & Sharp

Precision and quality have been creatively expressed in this uniquely sculpted 3D measuring system. Form, color and proportion have been exquisitely balanced with technology. The result has been a highly praised landmark product for Brown & Sharp.

ONE is a Coordinate Measuring Machine CMM offered by Brown & Sharpe as a low cost shop floor inspection system. Our design provided Brown & Sharpe with a distinctive product that projected an image of quality, precision and strength balanced with an elegant overall unified form. The classic arched support arms on either side of the work surface table were developed after many hundreds of study sketches. The curved form of each arm was carried into the base to unify the upper and lower sections of the product.

Brown and Sharpe's corporate yellow was selectively applied to moving elements for product branding. The bright yellow was enhanced by the muted overall grey tone of the structure. Man-machine interface was optimized by utilizing a flat touch screen control panel mounted on a 3 axis articulating arm.

Our primary emphasis was invested in creating a unique form for the one piece granite/epoxy cast composite gantry structure. Numerous concepts were created before the final design was attained.

The form of the uniquely curved upright supports was carried into the sheet metal base to provide an integrated overall look for the CMM.

Details throughout the product were carefully work out with B&S engineers to comply with technical, manufacturing and aesthetic requirements.

The final compact visually striking design was a resounding success in Europe as well as the US.
