IDS has a long history designing medical imaging equipment. This mammography X-ray system was designed in 1987 for Bennett X-ray (purchased by ThermoElectron). It became a landmark product for the company, which was previously exclusively dedicated to traditional X-ray equipment. The portable machine was optimized based on extensive human factors studies of patient and technician.

Concepts

Numerous concepts were developed to arrive at a design that satisfied all the ergonomic, technical and aesthetic requirements for the product. Overall size and shape was primarily dictated by major internal components which included a high voltage power supply, x-ray tube, collimator and control electronics.

General product features included:

Fold down safety face plate - was designed to provide comfort to the patient while keeping her face out of the x-ray path.
Convenient location of controls - in critical areas of the tiltable fixed focus arm allowed the technician to easily manipulate the system.
Flexibility and versitility -The system was design to provide the technician with flexibility and versatility during use because of the multiple degrees of freedom within the head assembly.
