Laboratory Urine Analyzer

The Clinitek 50 was introduced as a low cost alternative to its earlier cousin, the Clinitek 100. Its consolidated, compact enclosure was based on newer technology and more advanced analysis capabilities at a lower price. IDS developed this design based on extensive form studies and ergonomic analyses. The Clinitek 50 urine analyzer provided physicians and technicians the ability to easily diagnose patient's urine samples on their premises for immediate results. Data could conveniently be printed with its built in printer or transferred to a computer. Distinctive appearance and innovative design accurately describe this product which has been sold worldwide.
- At the beginning of this project we sought to develop a broad range of concepts by exploring each component in various spatial orientations. These components included the PC board, batteries, and sample tray assembly, paper roll and printer and the LCD.
- Components were then assembled to each other in vertical and horizontal orientations as shown in the picture to the left. This study provided us with a wide range of design directions and possibilities for the overall product form and orientation.
- A few of these design directions were selected for further development as shown in this layout illustration. Each assembly of components offered advantages based on footprint ergonomics and function.
- A selected group of these concepts were further developed and rendered as shown in these illustrations. The first group of ideas was developed to explore design possibilities with as much creativity as possible. These unusual and varied designs express this freedom.
- Merits of selected concepts were discussed and eventually further developed in a second set of renderings as shown in these illustrations.
- Three concepts from this group were selected for further development in 3D physical models. These non-functional models provided marketing specialists with tangible representations of the product. factors such as size and placement within the intended environment could effectively be evaluated by non-technical individuals.
- From this group of finished models, a final concept was selected for production. The final design was based on the rendering and model shown below:
