AMETEK Process Instruments is a worldwide manufacturer of process analyzers and instrumentation. This rack mounted sulfur dioxide monitor was designed to provide the user with an ergonomically intuitive front panel layout that was attractive and functional. Choice of colors, product identification and placement of controls was based on optimized human factors considerations.
This was the original front panel graphic design which Ametek wanted to improve aesthetically and ergonomically.
Since the front panel was limited to a sheet metal plate, we introduced the illusion of a third dimension graphically by introducing shadows and surface gradations in some of the concepts.
Visual separation of the keypad and LCD not only improved appearance, but also improved ergonomics by grouping user interface controls together.
The final layout membrane overlay graphic design was selected because if its proportions and unanimous appeal to marketing.
Concurrently with the design of the front panel, sheet metal parts for the electronic components were detailed by IDS. The final design improved product image at the same cost as the original. Customer perception of the product was significantly enhanced, improving sales and corporate image.
