Abastecedora Rimova S.A de C.V., located in Mexico City, Mexico is the foremost educational toy manufacturer in Mexico. A few years ago Mauro Monarris, the company’s president, expressed a desire to expand his company’s product line into school furniture and large interactive play centers based on Mexican culture.
Our first assignment was to design a rotationally molded chair and table for children in the 3 to 6 year age group. In keeping with Rimova’s reputation for design innovation and creativity, Mauro wanted a design that was unique. We provided him with a design which exceeded his expectations.
We began the project by identifying product requirements and reviewing similar products on the market.
The chair was the first product to develop and later used as the foundation for a companion table design. Early concepts were bold and molded in multiple parts. After evaluating numerous concepts, it was agreed that the chair should be molded in one piece and be stackable.
The previous concept was refined to include four legs
Throughout the refined development of this design, subtle details pertaining to parting lines, shut-off angles and draft were carefully integrated with the aesthetics.
The results of all this energy devoted to attaining a design with visual impact and attention to detail is clearly depicted in the following pictures.
